Meanderings in my Past: A Memoir

John Deadman

Introduction

I started writing my memoirs many years ago when my grandchildren were young as a story of what their old granddad had done in his life. I phrased the narrative in a way that would appeal to children including the title: Meanderings in my Past. The first few chapters about my childhood and schooling sat there, for years, until finally as I approached retirement, I decided that this was the basis of a memoir that I must pursue. I started with biographies of my parents because they were unquestionably the most important influences on my life.

When I started to rewrite the early chapters, I thought that as a memoir they could be condensed into one chapter or even a few comments but my grandchildren, now adults, persuaded me to leave them in because it was all part of the narrative. By the time I got to my university days and the factors that caused me to decide on psychiatry as a career, I was in full harness, ready for the long road. Chapters on postgraduate training, marriage and children rapidly followed, and then it was into my work in the mental hospitals, finally leading to our move to Hamilton and McMaster and my subsequent retirement.

It was a bad time for mental health care with the so-called deinstitutional-ization movement both in Canada and the United States that led to the closing of all the big hospitals, forcing many out of familiar institutions onto the street or in jail. That’s when I ventured into politics – a decision I thought I would never make – and which I sometimes regretted even to this day. But it was the right decision even though it caused many problems in my career and as I look back I would not have it any other way. Sometimes things just turn out that way.

I spend a whole chapter on our campaign against the Ministry of Health and the Mental Health Division that had in many ways turned against psychiatry. Many of my friends told me that ‘you can’t beat city hall’ but despite all odds we did beat the Ministry and the resulting agreements forced them to change their policies and to offer increased benefits to psychiatrists in the system. Although the old mental hospitals are now all closed, the new hospitals that have replaced them are much better and there has been a revolution in the way mental health care is offered, not only in Ontario, but right across Canada. We are proud that we were one of the forces that brought about that change.

Since then I returned to clinical work and I concentrated on the chronically mentally ill – those who had been the patients in the old mental hospitals. I worked with schizophrenia for many years and also with psychiatric emergencies and my strong interest in history. In the past few years I have worked with the Forensic Psychiatry Program at McMaster on various history projects and working with students on research projects. The other half of my time was spent in the Community Psychiatry Clinic working with people who had post-traumatic stress disorder and other severe anxiety problems. Now, as I move into retirement, I reflect on a life well lived.

I come from a medical family. My father, William James Deadman, was born to a pioneering family in Simcoe County. This story is told in Chapter One so I will simply note that dad struggled to get an education and worked as a school teacher in the Queen’s Bush to earn enough money to go to university. He finally graduated in medicine in 1913 and started training in pathology at John’s Hopkins University just before the Great War broke out in 1914. He spent four years overseas, with service in Egypt and Macedonia. When he returned in 1919 to the Hamilton General Hospital, he was the only pathologist with formal training in the whole area. He loved his work and could not imagine any other career for a young guy.

My mother also had more education than was usual for women in those days. She trained in voice and violin at the Toronto Conservatory of Music under Healey Willan who became a legend in Canadian music. She went on to a very busy life in Hamilton and was a great support to me when I decided to go into psychiatry instead of pathology.

I remember that my father was not happy with my decision to go into psychiatry (he wanted me to be a pathologist like he was) but when I persisted, he said to me: “John, I don’t care what you do actually, just don’t be a hack.” I would like to think that he is proud of me now. I have tried to do the best work I could and taken on challenges so I think that I was not a hack.

My father died in April, 1965 just four months after Sir Winston Churchill who was his inspiration during the Second World War. He left me a legacy that I have tried to maintain throughout my life. He was very much a Renaissance man. He was interested in everything around him included the advances in medicine that were bursting onto the scene in the late 19th century. He was warm, engaging and generous to a fault. He always had a joke to tell and often used this to advantage in his public speaking. He was born into a pioneering family just 2 decades after Confederation.

He found work on the farm to be hard at a time when farm families ate well but otherwise were dirt poor. He determined that he would get an education and finally became a physician and then a pathologist at a time before this was formally recognized as a specialty. He founded the forensic pathology program in Hamilton – one of the first in Canada. He was a member of at least two dozen professional associations from all over the western world. He died as he had lived. He never gave up until his final illness forced him into hospital where he died a week later. His reputation lived beyond him. He was very much a family man. I was his only son and he could be very tolerant of my misbehaviours up to a point. But when his patience was tried too much he could act decisively.

My mother loved music and was also ambitious. She had a good education including a certificate in violin and voice from the Toronto Conservatory of Music. She was very much in the social whirl of Hamilton after the Great War and was a loyal, loving partner. After my father’s death, she had a life of travel to all parts of the world until just before her death in 1982. Again she had many plans on the go and was greatly missed by family and friends.

I was at public school in the country with farm labourers’ children, many of them from the Six Nations Reserve near Brantford. It gave me a broad respect for others who often faced discrimination and maltreatment. It also gave me a respect and tolerance for difference. My subsequent education and career reflected this. One of the appeals of psychiatry to me was working with troubled people whom I could help to cope better with life. I was very active with senior positions in the mental hospital system, with government and then at McMaster University in Hamilton. I retired finally at the end of 2019.

In retirement I am concentrating on my books and enjoying a rich social life. These have recently been compromised by the COVID pandemic. We were living in our big house on Lovers Lane and finding it increasingly difficult to maintain. We decided that we should sell the house and move into a retirement residence. They prepared a large suite for us to be available at the end of November. But then Beatrice was stricken with infections and died on November 10th. After the funeral and the settlement of the estate, I felt better and feel hopeful for the future and a time when I can work on my books and be active again.

Subsequently, I developed water retention that was threatening my heart function. I was left with an indwelling catheter that required a move to a retirement home that could handle these things. I am now in Waterloo and continue to cope.

Acknowledgements

I acknowledge all the help I have received from my previous writings. I am not an easy writer and usually fuss over passages until I am satisfied. Perhaps I am obsessive but I have been all my life so I am unlikely to change now. However the work over many years with Paul Cameron, Jon Ennis, Gary Chaimowitz, Sam Sussman, David Streiner, Judy Smith and many others has helped me very much. I must also acknowledge my spouses, Francis and Beatrice who helped me and supported me at all times.
